Matt VanAcker
Director, State Capitol Tours
Through battle, death, defeat and victory, Michigan men like Daniel Crotty and the men of the Third Michigan Infantry rallied to their regiment's flags. Bullets shredded the banners. Blood stained their folds. Yet more than 160 of these flags survive. Presented to regiments on behalf of their communities, flags represented home as well as the fight for the Union. In battle, the large brilliantly colored banners marked the position of each unit—and made the flag bearer’s targets of enemy fire.
After the Civil War, the battle flags came to symbolize the sacrifice of war. In 1866, when many of Michigan's flags were returned to the state, Governor Henry Crapo promised the veterans that their flags would "not be forgotten and their histories left unwritten." When the state opened its new Capitol in 1879, the flags had a place of honor. Today, citizens from Michigan and beyond contribute to their conservation and preservation. The battle flags are cared for by a unique partnership between the Michigan Historical Museum and the Michigan Capitol Committee.

Historian Chris Czopek
The Grand River flows through Delta Township. One of Michigan's prominent tribes lived along it. They were called the Grand River Band of Ottawa Indians.
During the Civil War, many of them enlisted in the Union Army.
Chris will focus on the local tribe of Delta Township, their names, and tell what they did in the war. One soldier was nominated for the Medal of Honor. These Grand River Ottawa are an important part of Michigan's role in the Civil War.

Kim Crawford and Martin Bertera
Hear the story of a remarkable regiment at the center of Civil War history from Kim Crawford and Martin Bertera, authors of The 4th Michigan Infantry in the Civil War. The real-life adventure emerges from accounts of scores of soldiers who served, gleaned from their diaries, letters, and memoirs; the reports of their officers and commanders; the stories by journalists who covered them; and the recollections of the Confederates who fought against them.
CURRENT PROGRAMS & EVENTS
HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO CELEBRATE MICHIGAN'S CIVIL WAR FLAGS
LANSING - The Delta Township Historical Society will present a program on Michigan's Civil War flags. Capitol Tour Director and township resident, Matt VanAcker will present the program on Thursday, September 15th, 6:00 p.m. at the Delta Township Administration Building.
VanAcker will give a historical presentation on the Civil War flags and their importance to the state. As a historian for the state capitol, he revisits the stories of the flags.
Presented to regiments on behalf of their communities, flags represented home as well as the fight for the Union. In battle, the large brilliantly colored banners marked the position of each unit—and made the flag bearer’s targets of enemy fire. More than 160 of these flags survive and are cared for by the State Historic Commission.
The original flags were on display in the State Capitol Rotunda until the capitol's restoration. They are now in storage at the State Historical Center. Copies of each flag are on display at the capitol.
The historical society is presenting the program as a yearlong tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The Delta Township Administration Building is located at 7710 W. Saginaw Hwy, Lansing, just west of Horrocks. The program will be held on the second floor, on the west side of the building.
